Pantyhose into stockings conversion?

Has anyone had success cutting the legs off of pantyhose and turning the legs into stockings?

My favourite brand for stockings was Sheertex, but they stopped making stockings this year. However, their materials are (generally) bulletproof!

So, my first thought was about making the best of a tough situation - cutting the legs off of their pantyhose and using a garterbelt, to hold them up. Sounds like a good compromise, right?

There has to be a few catches or caveats, so I looked at YouTube and a few pages. Not a lot of feedback about success doing this. I have bought a few expensive stockings, in the past, only to have them rip pulling them on, so getting this right is important.

What about frayed edges?
Selecting double-layered legs at the top (whatever they are called) should help with reliability.
Garter tabs that can actually hold onto the material seems important.
Leggings could be considered, if this works.
Practicing on cheap pantyhose seems to be prudent, at first.

Has anyone here actually tried this?

long long story...

when i was in my early teens, i 'took over' for my sister, staying with an elderly neighbor lady, who did NOT like being in the house alone at night. she had had several room mates who had passed away, moved away or got married (one long time room mate which prompted my sister and then me) got married at age 87.

well she eventually rented out the spare bedroom to a co-ed at the local 2-year college. when i stayed on the weekends or when school was out, i was raiding her panty drawer (along with wearing some of my sisters panties) but i slept in the co-ed's bra and panties and pantyhose. i never thought to look for a nightie back then.

well the lady was always a big girl and i was rummaging around in a small closet in the bathroom across the hall one night and found some open bottom all in one briefers. i put one on and used towels and washclothes to fill it out a little bit, then proceed to masturbate and cum a couple of times before putting it all away and going back to bed. well those briefers used garter stockings.

i raided a couple of pair of my sisters pantyhose and did exactly what youre describing. i cut them in half through the panty along the seam, then sewed the half panty into a tube ala the top welt of a stocking. i had instant (well as long as it took me to sew them up lol) stretch nylong stockings that i could wear with these gartered undergarments.

recently i decided to try this again but im a bit heavier than i was when i was 15 so i need just a wee bit bigger pair of pantyhose. if i get the right size for MY size, they end up being way way too long as a stocking. if i go smaller to get better length, then the new welt made from the half-panty is too tight for my legs.

ive found stockings pretty cheap ($$ wise) on Temu and Shein. i dont have the app on my phone, i go to the website and search for Garter stockings. ive gotten some very servicable nylons that way

these back seam came in nude and black from Temu

Well, not for the same purpose as you but, a few years back, I tried to make a wig cap from the foot end of pantyhose. The cut produced a run immediately. On a subsequent effort I used a cigarette lighter to burn the edges, but it only made a blob I couldn't separate. I wish there was something useful I could do with my 20 year accumulation of single stockings and stay-ups!

One can buy inexpensive very high quality and silky Vintage Style Nylons on EBay for about $13 CAD including shipping from China.
I order 2-3 pr at a time to avoid any possible Import Duties and Taxes.

How many times can they survive being worn, though?

3x? 7X? 25X? 215X? More?

I get about 10 20 X at least. Depends on how many time I step on crunchy things on the floor and how many time my finger nails have cracks in them. Under normal care I would suspect ongoing to a point. I always spray mine with hair spray when new and after washing - big difference
Ask Leesa after she receives hers.
.

That's my point. I have worn one pair of Sheertex stockings so many times that I have literally lost track of the real number. At the moment, my best guess is 215 times and there is still lots of life left in them.

The problem? Sheertex doesn't make stocking anymore. I want to see if I can McGiver their pantyhose into stockings.

Can the top edge be folded over, to double up the material and make it stronger, and still have the garter tab work? Is it too thick or slips out?

I have never owned any, although from what I have seen they are rather thick - so no

Garter clasps? This is one exception - Hockey Garters. Back in the day and in some leagues perhaps still these days. Anyone who has played hockey back in the day will remember them well. Industrial strength straps and clasps. As well as the clasps would very likely do very well.

I have again started to save nylons as singles as many are the same - I save them and every once in awhile ago through them and and do some matching. I am still spraying my nylons with hair spray for much more service life.
I was born and raised in Regina where there was one of four(I believe) Army and Navy Stores in Canada. At times I would go shopping with A gf I had when I was 14-15 years old. It still staggers my mind on just how many pairs of nylon stockings they had for sale and all were either $1 or less. Unfortunately the last family member who owned the stores decided to sell and none ever reopened as she decided to turn her attention to Social Issues likely in the Vancouver area and good for her. The locations that I remember were - Regina, Vancouver, New West and perhaps one in Edmonton. The family had a long and mostly great history, with an exception of her brother dying from an OD of Cocaine I believe.

I spent a lot of time in that A and N store in Regina too, Jesse. 11th and Broad St, as I recall

Tonight, I am going to go to Shopper's and buy a cheap pair of pantyhose, to experiment.

Sealing the edge is a big concern of mine, too. Krazy Glue maybe?

The gusset will be cut off.

I was going to look for a pair that had extra material thickness or layers at the top, to make the top end stronger.

This is my test pair. Notice the extra dark band at the top of the legs. I cut the legs off at the top of the extra thickness. It cut easily without runs.

Control panty? That is wishful thinking. Run resistant? It's a selling point.

As suggested, nail polish was slathered onto the top edge, to curtail runs. Spring-loaded tongs were used to hold the top edge, so that the nail polish could be applied single-handedly. It went on easily. To be tested whenever I have time.

The real test will be to see if each leg is long enough. The D size is a bit shorter than the C size, but the D size is still meant for a person a bit lighter than me.

Fingers crossed...

Proof Of Concept

The problem, for me, is that the stockings themselves have too much length for my 33" inseam and I only have two garter belts. One had the garters shortened to their minimum (couldn't stay taught, too low) and the other has 6 tabs. Ugh.

So, the top of the stockings barely show at the bottom edge of an 11" skirt when standing, but is more sexy when sitting.

However, this proves that I can now use Sheertex pantyhose to do this. Fortunately my stash of their last production run will last me my lifetime, but the problem is that they don't have any patterns, except back-seam. If they have a pantyhose pattern that I like, then I know now how make my own stockings out of them.

If you want to experiment by doing this yourself, then get the correct sacrificial pantyhose. The panty part can be ignored, but the leg part should have the extra material at the top, to withstand being clamped in the garter tabs and to resist running.

Nailpolish seems to be good enough at stopping runs, so you might want to start with it, until a better sealer is found. Time will tell, but, so far, no runs. (On the other hand, out of nowhere after these pictures were taken, there is now a small hole on the front of one stocking. This is why I want to use Sheertex!)

If you try doing this yourself, give us your feedback, please.

Well, that didn't last long. These are supposed to be 20 denier stockings.

More like two holes and no heel stockings. 🤣

Poof! Gone... but the concept worked.

Get Sheertex instead and don't waste your money.

I buy multiples of the same style and color pantyhose. I always seem to get a run in just one leg, so when that happens, I just cut off the damaged leg right where the top of the leg meets the panty. If you do that to two pairs you can wear one on each leg. You end up with double the panty but I find that the extra layer keeps "things" in place better. You also then have a gap in the crotch you can use when you need access to that area.

I understand your method and the math. In my experiment, I was just trying to see if what I was thinking would work.

It did... for less than one day.
